When was the last time a child (age 2 and above) asked you for your phone or tablet…? I am sure some minutes ago, because they are now on vacation. And guess what they do with it as soon as they get it? GAME!
Is it that I am too strict or I am an old school mum because it really is annoying to me each time I see children playing game(s). I wonder if there is nothing else to do with their time or with the phone or tablet.
Don’t get me wrong, its not that I don’t support getting ‘gadgets’ for our children or that I don’t support them playing games, but I believe there are games that are educational and fun, like a simple game of numbers, a puzzle game…games that help develop their mental and intellectual capacity). but everytime…it is a NO!
Playing games could be fun, but the truth is we sometimes as parents offer it to them in a bid to distract them, or ‘to keep them busy’ especially when we are busy and don’t want to be distracted, but it can be addictive and could have subtle but dangerous effects on their well being: academically, psychologically and emotionally.

So, could you please highlight those effects and pointers to look out for in children who are already suffering from the effects. Thanks
ADDICTION! Anytime and Everytime
What did we do in our spare time when we were growing up? There were no mobile phones, TV stations used to open at 4pm. Getting video cassettes was a luxury even if there was a VCR player. Yet it was great growing up. We had the plastic puzzle game that would keep us busy. I also remember watching my older siblings as they play scrabble. We would play different field games like football, high jump, long jump etc. We would play Ayo game and read story books to one other. These things made up strong and smart. Now we have smart phones every where. Children now prefer handling a smart phone than playing hide and seek. Let’s try to engage our children with activities that will foster cognitive development.
