Are the children indeed the leaders of tomorrow?

May 27th is a distinct day set aside globally to celebrate our own future leaders;  the children. Coincidentally, it is just two days apart from our national democracy day. Yet, the rate at which good parenting is degenerating makes me wonder if children are indeed the leaders of tomorrow. How do I explain a parent asking her son to slap a teacher for beating him or another parent arresting the school management for ‘punishing’ his children or a parent buying examination questions and answers or parents that are always ‘unavoidably’ unavailable working extremely to give their children the best life. Hmmmmmm…the list goes on and to be sincere, I dread the future.

‘Parents listen to your children,
They are the leaders of tomorrow,
Try and pay their school fees,
And give them sound education’ was a song we sang in school then especially when marching to our classes but truth be told, are these all that qualifies a future leader? (Maybe yes, maybe no) Nevertheless, some of the actionable phrases in this song cannot be done in absential

Listening to our children is one of the best ways to communicate with them but being controlled by them or by our love for them is dangerous . Paying their school fees is essential as it affects the self esteem of a child (either we agree or not), but we should not limit our parent-child relationship to only what money can buy. In addition, do we know that giving them sound education is not defined by school fees, neither is it a function of school environment alone. Education is all rounded; physical education, mental education, spiritual education, sex education, emotional education, financial education…it is continuous. It is not just about  ‘A for Apple’

I say this jokingly but I think it is the sincere fact, ‘even the foetus in the womb is entitled to the national cake and would do anything to get it when he or she is born’. The word ‘corruption’ has become a household practice and if you are not beating them then you had better join them else you will be walking alone…and loneliness may lead to depression, hahaha!

Hmmmmmm…I can almost hear you saying ‘you dont understand…thing are rough’… but is this how we will continue to give excuses for our failure as parents? Do we even see anything wrong with what is happening or we are only sitting and expecting miracles to happen overnight to our children?

Raising future leaders does not happen by default, we have to be intentional.
