Can I ask you a sincere question? Who really gets the award during Price Giving Day? The child or the parent?
I think most of the time, it’s the parents (I stand to be corrected)
Children hardly understand what competition is all about (I mean the younger ones). You will see the children playing together after the prize giving paparazzi whereas the parents will start acting unnecessary drama. “How can it be that girl alone every year?” Will be the question of one parent from behind. The one who is bold enough will say to the school director that he/she can sense partiality.
As for the older ones, we somehow help them to ‘analyse the vocabulary’ in a subtle way. They unconsciously begin the rat race, and guess what? They pass on the baton.
I remember asking one of my nieces who got an award for being the 3rd best student in her class if the students who came first and second had two heads. Don’t blame me for asking such a question because I had been told such too several times before.
Children now see failure as a threat, a miserable enemy to achieving their potentials. Whereas failure is part of the package. The journey to great achievements is never straight – it is full of curves and bends. It is only the one who can endure to see beyond those obstructions that will land safely.
Always be gentle in the way you view your children’s failures, and help them to learn from them, get back up and carry on.
