3 things I learnt as a parent when I visited the Post Office

The illustration in the Bible that says, ‘salt  is useless and will be trampled on when it loses it taste’ is not only applicable to that whitish cooking item. As parents, with time, the table will turn and the children we are taking care of today will be in charge tomorrow. Even when we are strong and can still pound yam at 90 or go to the farm at 100, they will be in control.  You know how we argue with our teenagers that they are still children, that is how they will be arguing with us that we are old and….probably vulnerable.

This is scary right? That was exactly my fear when I got to the post office on Saturday…the place was quiet. The place that was usually busy back then, filled with people moving in and out, carrying out different activities is now quiet…

Hmmmmm…it looked like a typical parenting scene. I learnt some lessons as a parent as I ruminated on my experience that day, and I would like to share three of these lessons with us.

1. Even when we are old and tagged “old-school”, we are still important if we’ve added value in a way. The Post office has been of great help in the past and till date, it is still relevant. I know emails do the magic now-a-days; however some important documents still pass through the  post office till date. If you are still in doubt, ask online shoppers, especially those who shop internationally.
Therefore,  the kind of value we add today as parents will determine our relationship with our children in the nearest future.

2. Our children will come back to us even when we are old (to take care of us, keep our company…). Some parents can complain, curse, fight…and children of such parents visit once in a blue moon. As soon as they get an escape route out of the house, that is the end. Just because dad was expecting an important document, we all had to keep checking the post office at every opportunity. Therefore, As parents, we should be intentional about how we relate with our children.

3. Our legacy is important…when we are old and gone, what will we like our lineage to remember us for?

Nothing lasts forever, including our parenting assignment…
Life is in seasons, what you do in each season determines your final outcome in life.
