Fatherhood is a high calling that must be carried out intentionally and diligently. God is the Caller and the greatest example of fatherhood. If we call Him our Heavenly Father, then we must understand that fatherhood goes far beyond sperm donation. God is a Father who gives both His presence and His presents. He is involved, intentional, loving, and committed to the growth of His children.
As earthly fathers, we must reflect His nature in our homes. Today, using the acronym FATHER, let us look at six important things every father should intentionally give his children.
F – Firm Foundation of Faith
God’s ultimate desire is for us to know Him and grow in our relationship with Him. This is why He gave us Jesus Christ, who redeemed us and reconciled us back to Himself.
Fathers, how intentional are you about teaching your children the way of salvation? As the spiritual leaders of your homes, you are called to establish a firm foundation of faith. Teach biblical principles and values. Pray with your family. Study God’s Word together. Most importantly, live what you teach.
When children are grounded in Christ, they will remain standing in a world that is constantly shaking.
A – Access and Availability
One of the beautiful things about our Heavenly Father is that He is accessible. We do not need to climb seven mountains before we can reach Him. Through Christ, we have direct access to God.
In the same way, fathers should be accessible and available to their families.
Be available spiritually pray with your children and guide them in God’s Word.
Be available physically attend their events, spend time at home, and create meaningful family moments. Do not become a scarce commodity in your own house.
Be available emotionally listen to them, understand them, and provide a safe space for conversations.
Be available academically, financially, and relationally. While financial provision is important, it should not be the only way your family experiences your presence.
If God is our ever-present help, fathers should not be seen and felt only once in a while.
T – Truth
We live in a world filled with deception, confusion, and shifting values. Home should not be another source of confusion. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” As fathers, we must model truth in our words, actions, and decisions.
Tell the truth. Keep your promises. Let your children see integrity in action. Teach them God’s truth before the world teaches them its alternatives. When children know the truth from home, they are better equipped to recognize and reject falsehood elsewhere. After all, it is the truth that sets people free.
H – Heritage
Every child should know where they come from and whose they are. As Kingdom fathers, teach your children their heavenly heritage. Let them understand that they are ambassadors of Christ on earth. Teach them Kingdom culture, Kingdom values, Kingdom language, and Kingdom responsibilities.
They must know that while they live in this world, they are called to represent another Kingdom. At the same time, do not neglect their earthly heritage. Teach them about their family history, values, culture, and legacy. Children who understand their roots are often better positioned to fulfill their purpose.
E – Excellence
The excellence of God is evident everywhere, in creation, in nature, in seasons, and in His dealings with humanity. God does not do a shabby job, and neither should we.
Fathers must model excellence and teach it consistently. Excellence is not perfection; it is giving your best for God’s glory. Teach your children to do things well. Teach them diligence, discipline, quality, and attention to detail. Whether in academics, chores, ministry, business, or relationships, excellence should become their lifestyle.
Children who learn excellence at home will stand out wherever life takes them.
R – Responsibility
From the very beginning, God entrusted man with responsibility. Adam was instructed to tend the garden and steward creation. Responsibility is not a burden; it is a blessing that develops maturity. Unfortunately, many parents do everything for their children in the name of love and care. In the process, they unknowingly raise dependent adults.
Wise fathers teach responsibility early. Give children age-appropriate tasks. Teach accountability. Allow them to contribute to the family. Help them understand that privileges come with responsibilities. Children who learn responsibility at home become dependable adults in society.
Fathers, please do not delegate your God-given role entirely to your wives, teachers, pastors, or caregivers. While these support systems are valuable, they were never designed to replace you.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together in perfect unity, yet each fulfills His unique role. In the same way, fathers should work in partnership with their wives and support systems while taking the lead in raising their children.
Our children do not need perfect fathers; they need intentional fathers. As you reflect the heart of your Heavenly Father, may your children experience faith, availability, truth, heritage, excellence, and responsibility through your life.
Because a father’s influence does not end with his children, it echoes through generations.
